Madeline Ritter116
Project Director117

Madeline Ritter is a fully qualified lawyer. She was the artistic and managing director of “tanz performance köln”, an international production platform for contemporary dance, from 1999 to 2004, during which time she initiated various European networks to support young artists, including “dance roads” and “Repérages”. In 1993, she founded and became the artistic director of the “Pictures of (e)Motion” festival, a forum intended to develop innovative dance, film and new media technology projects at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Bonn. She was the production director of the “körper.technik//body.technology” workshop for international artists at the Theater der Welt festival in Berlin in 1999 and of the “millennium moves – International Dance Festival NRW” the following year. Working together with her project partner Heike Lehmke, since 1998 Ritter has organised numerous international dance events, festivals and dance film programmes that represent new developments in contemporary dance. She was the curator of the dance programme at the Theater Heilbronn from 2003-2008, during which time she organised, among other events, guest performances with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Sylvie Guillem and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Ritter has been a member of juries for the BBC’s Dance for the Camera programme, the Art Innovation Award of the Ludwig Forum, the National Performance Network as well as the German Dance Platform.

She was appointed project director of Tanzplan Deutschland by the German Federal Cultural Foundation in 2004. Ritter’s many years of experience of working with artists, institutions and sponsors formed the foundation for a partnership-based promotional strategy that was rolled out under her guidance and supported by Tanzplan projects in nine German cities as well as by many project partners. It has become a model project internationally. The strategy emphasised the cultural-political aspects of dance, such as transition and the cultural legacy of dance. Ritter also teaches Cultural Management at a number of European universities.118
