After completing her secondary school studies followed by an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Vienna, Barbara Schindler studied general and comparative literature and French at the Universities of Vienna, Montpellier and Berlin. She worked as a bookseller in the Literaturhandlung run by Rachel Salamander in Berlin alongside her studies.
After graduating, she organised and managed literary events for the Carl Hanser publishing house in Munich and the related Paul Zsolnay publishing house in Vienna from 1996 to 2000.
From May 2000 to July 2004, Schindler was the head of press and public relations at the Volksbhne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz theatre in Berlin where she worked with a wide range of artists, organised the opening event of Art Forum 2003 in the theatre and marketed the numerous readings, theoretical debates, concerts and film premiers.

Barbara Schindler has been head of communication and marketing at Tanzplan Deutschland since the beginning. Her responsibilities include the development of all marketing strategies, overseeing all publications (print and oline), editing the website and looking after and expanding Tanzplan Deutschlands diverse network of relationships. Schindler also acts as a consultant in the strategy discussions of the Tanzplan Deutschland management team.142
